Mainstream Fake News Challenge

Before “Russian hacking” became the excuse of the day, Clinton and her pals in the media were blaming “fake news” for her stunning loss. Supposedly these are false stories spread through independent news sources that made Clinton look bad. As if she needed any help in that department.

The mainstream press seems to feel that they’re the only people with the skills and credentials to report the news accurately. That’s a bold claim from the folks who gave us Jayson Blair.

So here’s the challenge. Off the top of my head, without doing any research, I’m going to list all the fake news stories, reported by the mainstream press as fact, that I can. Join in. Add your favorites in the comments. We’re not looking for bias, because we’d be here for the next 10 years, we’re looking for outright lying and deception.

Here are a few of mine, in no particular order:

The Washington Post issued a breathless report that the Russians had hacked a Vermont power utility. They ran the story without bothering to check with the utility first, basing their claims on “government sources.” Well, it turns out the utility hadn’t been hacked. A laptop owned by the utility had been. A laptop that wasn’t connected to the grid. A laptop that had a certain kind of malware on it. Which means that it may have been as simple as some working stiff at that plant going to the wrong porn site, catching a computer virus and nearly causing WWIII.

As for Russian hacking, the media-hailed JAR report which was supposed to “prove” Russian involvement in the hacking of the DNC, and thus invalidate Trump’s election as a Russian plot, has been criticized by numerous groups of IT security experts. The “proof” the Russians were involved were some IOCs, or Indicators of Compromise, such as specific malware that apparently is used by state-sponsored Russian hackers. Trouble is, those tools are also used by pretty much every other hacker as well. So it’s discovery proves little except that using “password” as your password is a bad idea. I’m talking to you, John Podesta.

On the same front, CNN’s reporting on all this hacking going around needed some B-roll, a visual to support the story. So the ran with an image of computer code flashing across a screen. Trouble is, the code was actually from a VIDEO GAME, Fallout 4, and had nothing to do with actual hacking.

Speaking of CNN, there was a CNN report, a while back, about safety defects causing police cars built by Ford to explode when rear-ended. The gas tanks, we were told, ruptured too easily in a rear-end collision. It was shocking, sensational stuff. Clearly the evil corporate overlords at Ford valued money over the lives of police officers. It wasn’t until 20 minutes into the report that CNN finally fessed up that these explosions had occurred when the police cars had been hit by trucks or SUVs, big, heavy vehicles, all of which which had been traveling at speeds in excess of 90 miles per hour. In which case, yeah, the gas tank is probably going to rupture, but don’t let that get in the way of a good corporate hit piece.

While we’re on the topic of exploding vehicles, there was a major news investigation about the gas tank design on a GM truck which made it prone to explode in a crash. To prove it, a news crew crashed a bunch of trucks. When they didn’t explode as planned, the crew affixed model rocket igniters to the gas tank to ensure they went up. Because what you want to happen is clearly more important than what actually happened when it comes to network news.

The New York Times covering up Communist atrocities in Russia in the 1930’s.

A false Newsweek story about Korans being flushed down the toilet at Gitmo triggered riots in the Middle East in which hundreds of people were killed. Newsweek lied, people died.

Hands up, don’t shoot. According to the press, Michael Brown was a “gentle giant” who had been executed in cold blood by a racist cop. The media refused to wait for the evidence to run with their story, which was too bad. It turned out that Wilson, without question, was justified in the use of deadly force. But hey, at least there was no fallout from the maliciously dishonest reporting, just ask the owners of businesses burned to the ground in the resulting riots.

Trayvon Martin. From using pictures of Trayvon as an angelic 12-year old boy, instead of the 18-year old adult that he was, to re-editing the 911 call to make Zimmerman look like a racist, to inventing the entirely new ethnic classification of “white hispanic” to describe Zimmerman, the media once again ran with their race-baiting narrative, made race relations in the US worse, all in the name of getting it incredibly and totally wrong.

Duke rape case. Yep, those white frat boys were guilty. Until they weren’t. The prosecutor was the only one involved who went to jail. But hey, who cares if the media destroys the lives of a few rich white males in pursuit of an agenda? Since those frat boys clearly refused to check their privilege, the media had to check it for them.

Tawana Brawley. A blast from the past and the incident that put Al ‘Charlatan’ Sharpton on the map. Brawley made up a story of abduction and rape by police and officials in Duchess County, NY. The media ran with it. Lives were destroyed. The incident elevated Sharpton to hero status. Until it all turned out to be fake. Yet Sharpton is still taken seriously.

Muslim girl in NYC assaulted by white Trump supporters: FAKE.

Swastikas and KKK graffiti at a college campus the work of Trump supporters: FAKE.

Trump supporters at some college (Wellesley, I think) shouting racial epithets as they drove through campus: FAKE.

A black church set on fire with “Vote Trump” written on the wall in spray paint. Clearly the work of a racist Trump supporter. Well, not so fast. Turns out it was one of the church’s own congregants. Makes great “News” though, even if it is FAKE.

Unsubstantiated accusations of sexual misconduct against Trump, some so ridiculous it’s amazing they ever saw the light of day. Such as the photographer who felt a light touch on her butt, figured it was her assistant who was walking by her carrying camera bags, then decided it had to have been Trump, but only after he ran for President.

The Cape Hattaras lighthouse was moved because of global warming. Yes, Time Magazine reported that increasing sea levels forced the federal government under Bill Clinton to move the Cape Hattaras light house lest it fall into the rising sea. This is utter BS. It was beach erosion that forced the move, as the Outer Banks have been migrating slowly westward due to storm action for thousands of years. If it was rising sea levels, it follows that every lighthouse, as well as a lot of beach-front mansions (some probably owned by the editors of Time), would need to move as well.

On the global warming front, we’re all supposed to be dead by now. From the 1970s book “The Population Bomb” breathlessly endorsed by the media, to reports as recent as the mid 2000s that the Arctic would be ice free by 2015, the media has gotten the environmental doomsday story wrong time and time and time and time again.

Hurricane Katrina. Remember when babies were being raped at the SuperDome and 10,000 dead bodies were piled downstairs? FAKE.

The George Bush faked documents scandal.

Stephen Glass at The New Republic wrote about all kinds of things that never actually happened.

The infamous Food Lion expose’ where an undercover reporter for ABC News got a job at a Food Lion store and literally made stuff up to make the grocery store chain look bad. Food Lion sued for access to the original tapes which, once released, showed how the reporter had manipulated events.

The moment of Michael Moore shouting at Charlton Heston as Heston walks away in Bowling for Columbine. It was faked. They shot Moore shouting after Heston had left. Not to mention the thousands of other lies that movie, and all of his other movies, have propagated with mainstream “News” support.

How about that great Cuban healthcare?

Phew! Well, that’s all I’ve got, but I know I’ve missed dozens (if not hundreds) of more examples. So jump in and add your favorite mainstream media lies, manipulations and Fake News stories in the comments below.
